Potential Risks and Complications

Most knee joint operations are problem free, but 1 in 20 may have a complication from the surgery. Most complications are minor and can be treated successfully.

Complications depend on several factors, including age and general health. In general, younger patients with no other medical issues will be at a lower risk for complications.

Some complications can include:

  • Blood clots
  • Wound infection
  • Nerve or tissue damage
  • Bone fracture
  • Dislocation
  • Bleeding and wound hematoma
  • Discomfort
  • Stiffness

It is also important to remember that anesthesia and pain medications can have side effects. Your anesthesiologist will discuss these with you at the time of your consult.
